We were aware that this joint had changed hands years ago but this was our first chance to visit since the turnover. The first thing we noticed was that the warming pit that used to be out front was gone. In its place was more seating out on the patio. Inside, after a few other customers, we ordered a rib special and a two meat plate with brisket and sausage. The brisket was undercooked and difficult to pull apart. It was downright rubbery. The fat was unrendered and there was no smoke flavor at all. The sausage, supposedly jalapeno, had no spice and a bland taste. Sadly that same sausage seems to be found in many joints we sampled during this trip. The ribs were overcooked, but appeared to have been in the warmer a long time. With one bite, all the meat came away from the bone, however the bark was so leathery it was not chewable. I also grabbed a stuffed jalapeno filled with chopped brisket and cheese with a cap of bacon. Even that was bland. The other sides were also very average. The mac and cheese tasted like it was out of a box and the jalapeno tater salad seemed sadly lacking in pepper taste or color.
This was a place we had been looking forward to trying, but on this day, this meal, they were a big disappointment. Hopefully we were just there on an off day.
